So, what really is a dental crown? A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps a tooth. The dental crown is a tooth shaped cap placed over a tooth to restore size, shape, strength and most of all improve appearance. A dental crown may be needed for several reasons; teeth get weakened through the years, to support a tooth with a large filling, cover a dental implant, protecting a tooth with extensive decay, and to hold a dental bridge in place. Broken cusps or severe wear can be corrected by a crown also. Crowns are custom-made of a variety of materials and your dentist can explain which techniques and materials are most appropriate in your particular situation. At Dr. McElhinney’s office located in Reno, is the best expert on dental restoration. Contact Dr. McElhinney’s office with any questions you may have.

A common problem a person may have as we age is the yellow and even dingy appearance of their teeth. As the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, and the enamel becomes less porous. Well, luckily today due to advances in the dental industry many treatment options are available.

First your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to assure good oral health. Once your dentist gives you a clean bill of oral health. A treatment plan is made specifically for you, such as custom whitening trays that hold the whitening gel close to your teeth. In most cases, your dentist will recommend whitening during waking hours. Whitening gels are generally very safe and mild, though few patients may experience sensitivity of the teeth and gums. For this reason, whitening should be done by dental professionals who know how to correct this problem should it occur. Most patients will see dramatic results in anywhere from three to eight days. Results may last for years though some patients prefer to do a “booster” bleach occasionally to keep their smile as bright as possible.

Looking to whiten and restore natural tooth color, look no further Dr. McElhinney's dental practice has many years of experience located in Reno. His dental staff is very professional and knowledgeable so don’t hesitate to contact Dr. McElhinney's office with any questions.

Migraines, no fun! When so many people have this problem. Well luckily today due to advances in the dental industry help is here. The new device is called Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System (NTI-tss) which helps reduce headaches and migraines. It is the only dental device to earn approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of migraine headaches (and muscle tension headaches) which are related to clenching and grinding of the teeth and jaws. This often intense nocturnal activity is purported to lead to a hyperactivity of the trigeminal nerve, often triggering typical migraine events.

The objective of the NTI is to relax the muscles involved in clenching. Research has shown that the NTI is about 80% effective in reducing both the severity and frequency of migraines. Many patients have reported sleeping better than they have in years. This relatively inexpensive device can reduce pain and suffering, reduce lost time from work and the need for medication.

Don’t hesitate to contact Dr. McElhinneys dental staff located in Reno, with any questions. If you want the best dental experience in Reno, Dr.McElhinney is your dentist!

Everyone knows that getting regular dental exams is important for the health of your teeth and gums, but what about getting dental x-rays? Dental x-rays are extremely helpful in detecting oral diseases of the teeth, surrounding gum and bone such as infections in the bone, abscesses, cysts and other abnormalities. X-rays can reveal areas of decay which would normally be invisible on visual inspection.
Thanks to advances in dental technology, digital x-rays require 90% less radiation than older film-based x-ray machines.  The radiation from a complete set of x-rays is extremely small compared to other naturally-occurring sources of radiation such as sunbathing, flying cross country in an airplane or skiing/hiking in the mountains.

A complete set of x-rays is recommended every 3-5 years. Cavity-detecting x-rays (bitewing x-rays) generally should be taken every year.
And just a little bit more information on the importance of x-rays.   Young children especially benefit from this technology. The doctor can evaluate the presence or absence of permanent teeth, eruption pattern and angulation of permanent teeth before they erupt and push the baby teeth out of the mouth.

Since digital X-rays can be considered as preventive and diagnostic care for patients, most insurance policies will usually cover the cost but you should always check with your insurance provider for more information. Dr. McElhinney and his staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
