What a blessing it is to be pregnant, but all the hormonal changes that occur can be overwhelming to many women. So, why should women be more concerned about oral care when pregnant? An increased hormonal level during pregnancy causes the gums to swell, bleed easily, and bacterial plaque buildup. It’s more important to have your teeth cleaned to remove plaque and tartar to avoid bone loss around your teeth and prevent unusual overgrowths of the gum tissue called “pregnancy tumors”. The key is preventive oral care, which is essential to avoid infections.

Unfortunately, many pregnant women don’t feel well, snack more and do not take good enough care of their teeth and gums. Dental visits during pregnancy are very safe especially if the work is done in your second trimester. Those that do and seek regular dental care before, during, and after pregnancy actually notice little or no dental problems.

So, no more excuse why patients that are expecting can’t visit their dentist. Your dentist will go over with you what is safe and what can be postponed until after the birth. Don’t hesitate to contact Dr. McElhinney’s dental staff located in Reno with any questions. If you want the best dental experience in Reno, Dr.McElhinney is your dentist!
